The problem is is all they understand is money and power. How do change that? They are morally bankrupt and the churches bang on about compassion as if it is out of fashion all the while they practise arrogance and deceit and don't get me started on the use of an AA based program for alleged sex offences , doesn't that just take the cake. Sorry but welfare and prisons go hand in hand historically and it came from merry old England. These people have no connection to the land or its spirit. How do you deal with people like that? They are two dimensional ghosts. Hopefully more and more people will become aware and refuse to do these filthy peoples bidding and resist.

Very true that when these people in power see something good but it is not making money they have to kill it and subjugate everyone because of it, and then destroy a good thing. How threatened they are by something so distant from their blind sided lifestyles. It is sickening these people have all that control. No wander the world is such a mess. It is really sad and disappointing that a person tried to turn things around and some block heads came and bulldozed everything with their stupid brutal mind set. That is such a sad story but so common.

25% of the people incarcerated in Canada's male and female penitentiaries are First Nations citizens ( See statics shared in my OISE U of T thesis in 2003). This should be an alarm bell clearly ringing that the way non-Native newcomer dominant culture societies treats the Original Peoples of conquered lands is wrong on so very many levels. The Sorry Movement in Australia and the apologies of government and church concerning the atrocities of Indian residential schools is only a beginning. I believe one of the most important tenants of life is : "Do no harm" . When the road people must travel is bombarded is with potholes of intolerance, racism and a myrad of abuses, question is "How do we move forward with integrity? " A person who is on the right track, but just sit there immobile, we will get run over. Four Arrows article is a call to understanding, compassion and action. One arrow alone is easily broken, but a bundle is strong. We must work together as a global community to mend the road, disarm the mental minefields and consciously remove the barbed fences of abuse, intolerance and racism. We must stop cultural genocide.

Four Arrows powerfully depicts the shame of indigenous people being dehumanized. When we put a story and a face to the statistics, then we connect the heart to the head and have a much better grasp of what makes people go sideways and what it takes to get them on their path. In line with the powerful, passionate truths written by Four Arrows in his article on Red Road Lost, Mid-Day Star in 2003, shared stories about refinding that Red Road. Download http://www1.aiatsis.gov.au/exhibitions/e_access/mnscrpt/a350511_a.pdf and go to page 238 to read his account. What is lost can be found. Hope shines like a light in the night sky. A Native leader once said: "The battle is only lost when the womens' hearts are on the ground." Take up your drums. Reclaim your voice. So few know the stories in our educational systems even here in Canada. When people know the truth, then there is the possibility to care. With knowledge and understanding the red road can be found. A youth in whom is nurtured a sense of hope, a sense of belonging in the context of caring community (even if that we only one person) and a sense of purpose can positively change not only his or her life, but those of so many others. Thank you Four Arrows for shining light on difficult truths in the Red Road Lost and for being a catalyst for change. May the web weave your words around the planet so many see, hear and say the truth and are moved by it to be more conscious, aware and loving members of the Human Tribe. The greatest power to undo wrong is love in action. YD - WHD Canada

The stories of original peoples around the planet are unfortunately remarkably similar. One of the things that has both intrigued and saddened me is how young Indigenous people appear so beautiful and happy as kids, yet can be so different by the ages of say 10 onwards. I was recently talking with a man who works with young Aboriginals in Roebourne about this and we concluded it was partly because of socialisation and education processes, including the 'umerican dream' images in all media that all are taught to want and few will attain. Our conversation took place in a community where a beautiful young (17) woman had committed suicide. She was a cultural ranger for a site of ancient petroglyphs that had been ignorantly been degraded (10% destroyed) for an energy project, and whose original custodians had been massacred not long after settlement of the area by europeans years ago. What would the comparatively recent history of that ancient place have taught this young woman?

My stepfather's first wife was Navaho. Of her six children, two committed suicide, and one was brutally murdered. They suffered the ignominy of having to choose between abject poverty, unemployment, and starvation on the reservation lands or facing daily threats in miserable public housing. I agree with Noreen: indigenous people are seen as a direct threat to the oligarchy which controls this planet, because those in harmony with the earth and each other do not need government, period.

I am always deeply saddened when I read or learn of the past and ongoing destruction, not only of Native Americans, but all indigenous and tribal people, throughout our planet. This encompasses everything from outright genocide to the obviously biased judicial system and the tearing apart of families and cultural destruction. I have always believed, now more than ever, that those in power have a deep seated fear of such societies because of their deep spiritual connections to our universe and all living things. The one thing our "controllers" do not want, is for us to become aware and conscious of who and what we are. When enough people awaken to their true reality, their game will be over. I see this happening now as those with the power and the wealth scramble in a last ditch effort to control every aspect of our lives from where and when we spend our money to our health and longevity (as they kill us off in a hundred different ways). I can only hope that now that their target has moved to include the majority of the earth's population and not just that of indigenous people, more people will awake to our universal consciousness and our indestructible connection to one another and all living things. Only by realizing, and taking back, our power, can we forever free ourselves from the destructively evil bondage a few would impose the human race. God bless all who have been sacrificed to achieve their ends, and God bless us all......we are one.

Dear Sir,
thank you so very much for this magnificent article. I remain humbled and appalled by my fellow humans' constantly ignoring what is daily staring them in the eyes. We all have so much that we can give and so much that we need to ask help with to forgive ourselves and so to forgive others.
with apologies for not doing more,
                   with deep respect,
                       Stephen Courtauld
