Thanks Margaret. I agree with just about all you wrote and believe we are in sync. My email is gerry_georgatos@yahoo.com.au
The article was focused on trauma and the need to contextualise it and does not diminish any fundamental elements that need specialist support. It was not an article about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trauma standalone but of trauma in general while accepting that trauma varies. Much respect, Gerry

Hi Gerry,

I agree strongly with most of the points that you make but this article concerns me because I think it could hinder people from seeking help for trauma-related mental health issues. As a Psychologist working with people who are suffering from the impact of trauma, I agree wholeheartedly that treatment of trauma shouldn't become a lifestyle or interfere with people accessing work if they can work. Modern treatments can be short but sometimes it does take longer. Treatment should enhance a positive sense of self and be alongside of a positive life.

When the rate of suicides is so high, my concern is that their isn't enough funding for mental health problems (including trauma-related conditions). I believe strongly that the approach to these problems should be holistic and include the kind of programs that Ngalla Maya Aboriginal Corporation offer.

I'd love to talk more about this to you. I'm interested to know more specifically how the trauma narrative is oppressing Aboriginal people.
