I am a detainee at the most notorious of all detention centres, Christmas island. the struggle that comes with being place in one of these centres is near on unbearable. . it has taken all my summoned will and faith, although we are refused the opportunity to practice any such faith i.e. Christianity or catholic, just to have lasted as long as I have. And I have only been here 6 months. We are subject to punishment undeserved everyday. Policies and rules change daily almost to suggest there is no real management to the place and our legal rights are stripped away from us with no real sensible reason or excuse. Those of us trying to stay cannot do anything to fight our situation diplomatically as we don't have access to the people or agencies that can do anything to help and any action we do take is stonewalled. It is slow and menacing emotional torture design to have people break and give up. Those of us that have been to jail know the difference between the two and it is unbelievable apparent that being incarcerated in jail is leaps and bounds more compliant to humane and just treatment then that of these centers. We are in here not to be punished but as free men without visas so justly held on commonwealth ground with complete access to the same rights as a free person. That is far far far from the truth. We are treated less than human and if we don't comply with the pressure of these ever more degrading environments then we give up our chance to re-intergrated back into the community. There is absolutely no compassion for those with families, those with dependents, there is no management plan in place for us. Our lives are being destroyed, family ripped apart and the people in the community who need us are being punished just as much as we are because we are subject to the fact that Australia is not our country of birth. There are no security risks. Just people who want a normal life and/or people who want to get back to living life. Common sense would prevail in these situation but as long as serco and dibp continue to cover up what are clearly human right breaches and their appalling management of these places not to mention the fact that they do not follow the policies in place to protect us then this treatment will continue to happen and people will continue to be destroyed.
